12 honest lessons from 12 years of building a creative business

This year marks 12 years since I started Raspberry Blossom, which feels both surreal and something I’m incredibly proud of. Over those years, I’ve learnt so much, not just about business, but about myself. Some lessons came easily, others through mistakes, late nights, and moments of doubt. I wanted to pause, reflect, and share 12 lessons I’ve learnt from 12 years of running a business, in the hope they might help or reassure anyone building something of their own.

Lesson 1: Just Start

Life is short, and you’ll never know where your dream can take you unless you begin. Believe in yourself and take the leap. I didn’t start with a business plan, which some people might think was reckless, but I truly believe that over-planning can lead to paralysis. You need a clear purpose and vision, but you don’t need every step mapped out before you start. You figure a lot out along the way by doing it.

Lesson 2: Focus on Your Own Journey

It’s so easy to look at other businesses on social media and think they’re absolutely smashing it. But social media shows the highlights, not the tears, late nights, or quiet meltdowns behind the scenes. Try to stay focussed on your own path.

Lesson 3: You Can't Do Everything

Building a business isn’t a solo sport. Invest time in your team and surround yourself with people who share your values and inspire you. You are not meant to be brilliant at everything. Growth happens when you bring in people who are amazing at the things you’re not.

Lesson 4: Don't Wait For Perfection

Perfection can stop everything from moving forward, something I constantly remind myself of as someone with high standards. Sometimes ideas or products never see the light of day because you’re striving for “perfect.” Put it out there, learn, and build something better next time. If you stand still, you can’t learn.

Lesson 5: Look After Yourself

This is one I’m always working on. I’m obsessed with my work and often feel guilty for resting, taking a walk, or having an early night. But that’s when ideas flow and clarity comes. When you look after yourself, you show up better for your business.

Lesson 6: Don't Waste Energy on Copycats

If people copy you, don’t give it your energy. Move on to the next thing.
They can replicate products, but they can never replicate you.
Your uniqueness is your super power.

Lesson 7: Set Boundaries if Working With Your Partner

Working with your husband or partner can be incredible, but it can also blur the lines fast. Set clear rules about when business talk stops and protect time that’s just for you as a couple. Otherwise, it can become all-consuming.

Lesson 8: Ignore the Doubters

Don’t listen to people who say you “can’t do this” or that you’re “not entrepreneurial.” Surround yourself with cheerleaders, people who believe in you, encourage you, and push you forward.

Lesson 9: Pause to Celebrate the Wins

Big or small, take time to acknowledge what you and your team have achieved. Sit in the moment. Celebrate it.

Lesson 10: Structures and Processes Matter

Even when you’re a team of one, it’s worth thinking about structure early on. Simple processes, automation, and systems that make your life easier will save you so much time and headspace in the long run. Work as if someone else might join your business one day, because when they do, having those foundations in place will make growth smoother and far less overwhelming.

Lesson 11: Be Agile

Don’t over-deliberate decisions. Business moves fast, and you need to think quickly, solve problems, and test ideas. Try something, if it doesn’t work, adjust and try again.

Lesson 12: Keep Having Fun!

You started because you loved something enough to take a risk. Hold onto that joy. When you enjoy what you’re building, it shines through everything you do.
